e-Comm Reflection

• What did you learn?

I learned how to use the adobe suite, recognize good uses of graphic design, and be able to create my own digital art.

• How did you learn it?

Mrs. Lofquist teaching style consists of following basic tutorials and just jumping into a project head first without any instruction. Google is your biggest friend in this class and there is almost always a forum somewhere that can help you when you get stuck.

• Why is it important?

It is important to know how to learn on your own without any help because that is more like the real world. If you can take it upon yourself to learn the skills you can do well in graphic design, if not you might fall behind and be very confused about what is going on in the class.

• What are your greatest strengths/what are your weaknesses?

The think I'm the best at in Photoshop and Illustrator are the technical skills. I really enjoy learning the ins and outs of these two programs because they are so advanced and have so many uses.

• What are you going to do with what you have learned?

I will be able to make my own custom logos or whenever I need do make my own graphic I will be able to. I have to skills to make my own things instead of asking someone else to do it for me.

• Is there anything you would change? Why?

If I was able to change something in e-Comm currently it would be the grading system. The way grading was changed this year seems like a step backwards for the program. Instead of having the regular point grading system it pretty much transitioned back into a system used by elementary schools. The current system is way to subjective and doesn't accurately grade all the students. A non letter point system might be more like the real world but it isn't the best fit for a high-school academic setting. The regular grading system isn't perfect but it gives a more accurate representation of what you should be getting in the class instead of choosing a letter grade at the end of a semester.

The lack of instruction in this class leads to a huge waist of time. Projects that can be completed easily in a couple class periods are instead giving weeks to do the same amount of work. I don't know how these can be changed other than giving stritcter dead lines and less having the class run itself.

• Conclusion/Summary

I really did enjoy my time in e-Comm but it doesn't seem the right fit for me. I don't enjoy the teaching style very much and the grading system is the thing that pushed me over the edge.

Walkway is the font used on the business cards. All the projects presented today were made in AI. This was the 2015 Fall final for graphic design. We showed the skills we learned this semester in making patterns and the logos we made in old projects to design these cards.

How to use cutout filter in Photoshop

Get a free use image on Google by choosing "Labeled for noncommercial reuse with modification" if it is for personal use(Remember there are other ways to obtain images like MorgueFiles or if you take them yourself.)

Download the image and make sure to attribute to the original author if that is what they want.

Open the image in Photoshop and remove the background.

Open up the filter gallery on photoshop Filter>Filter Gallery

Choose cutout and the right settings you want for you own image

Click on ok and save your image, you're done! Don't forget to remove pixel fringe from the image if that is a problem.

With the new experience I have learned in making logos I have made these two new ones. The process started with choosing about 8 fonts that I liked. The two best ones I created an outlines for them and than readjusted the lines using direct select. To get the overlapping look from the logos I used the live paint bucket(K) to change the colors to make it appear it was going over.

My new logo uses more advanced tools in Ai. I have learned how to change the text by making outlines instead of just typing it.

Patterns

Repeating Pattern

This project taught me how to use adobe illustrator pattern making. The pattern creating in AI makes the processes of creating a pattern way easier than trying to tile a pattern yourself. I started of the project by making a lot of patterns, after asking my friends around me I kept on getting less and less and finally got the pattern I liked the best. Before I submitted it I changed the colors to fit the design feel we agreed on. In my next project I can apply the patterns I made to the fill of shapes to speed up the process.

Motif

This project is pattern that can be split into four different sections and has a center point. The motif was harder for me to create than the repeating pattern. Once I learned how to combine the shapes it made making the motif a lot faster. Radial patterns, they start in the center and are a circle

Graphic design is involved in everyones life everyday. You use graphic design to convey words and images to make a message. You experience graphic design whenever you see products logo or see typography on any platform. There is an idea or image each designer conveys when ever you see there design its supposed to make you have a sense of beauty whenever you see it. Its an universal language that everyone can understand.

Personal

Graphic design is important to me because I see it all the time. I want to be able to get good at creating things that follow CARP and are pleasing to look at. Olathe Northwest has loads of opportunities to use the skills you learn in e-Comm like in making tee shirts designing the year book ect.
